What is the Google Map Pack?

The Map Pack is the boxed group of three local business listings that appears at the top of Google Search results for queries with local intent. Each listing shows the business name, photo, star rating, review count, address, hours, and a tap-to-call button, alongside a map showing pin locations.

Also known as: Local Pack, Local 3-Pack, Snack Pack

When someone searches for a local service ("dumpster rental near me", "scaffold rental Charlotte"), Google detects the local intent and inserts the Map Pack above the standard organic results. The three businesses inside it are selected from Google Business Profile listings based on proximity, relevance, and prominence (review signals, completeness, NAP consistency, engagement).

Only three businesses get a Map Pack slot for any given search. Everything below the Map Pack is the standard 10 organic links, which receive substantially less click traffic on mobile in particular. On a smartphone, the Map Pack and its three listings can fill the entire above-the-fold screen.

Why it matters for rental operators

For rental businesses, the Map Pack is the highest-leverage marketing surface. Rental searches are urgent and local. Most customers call within an hour of searching. The three businesses inside the Map Pack capture the overwhelming majority of those calls; rankings four through ten are a distant runner-up. Map Pack dominance is the single most impactful local SEO outcome for rental operators.

Examples

  • Searching "roll-off dumpster rental Charlotte NC" on a smartphone surfaces a map with three local dumpster companies pinned, each showing reviews and a tap-to-call button. Those three companies will receive most of the inbound calls from that search query.
  • Searching "scissor lift rental near me" while standing on a job site triggers a Map Pack of three equipment rental companies within a short drive. The same query from across town surfaces a different three.

Common questions

How do I get my business into the Map Pack?

Map Pack ranking is driven by Google Business Profile optimization (complete categories, accurate service area, regular posts, photo uploads), review signals (volume, recency, response rate), and NAP consistency across the web. There's no paid path into the Map Pack. It's an organic local SEO outcome.

How is the Map Pack different from Google Maps?

Google Maps is the standalone mapping product. The Map Pack is the three-business module that appears at the top of regular Google Search results for local queries. It pulls business data from the same source (Google Business Profile) as Maps but renders inside Search results.

Why does the Map Pack only show three businesses?

Google limits the Map Pack to three slots to keep the search results page scannable. Users can click "More places" to see a longer list, but click-through to those extended results is much lower than to the visible three.
