What is a Service Area Business (SAB)?
A Service Area Business (SAB) is a Google Business Profile classification for businesses that travel to customers rather than serving them at a fixed storefront. Dumpster rental companies, plumbers, mobile dog groomers, and HVAC technicians are all SABs. The customer does not visit the business address.
Also known as: SAB
Google distinguishes SABs from storefront businesses (which receive walk-in customers) because the two require different Google Business Profile configurations. SABs verify their physical address with Google during setup, then hide that address from public view and define their service areas as a list of cities, counties, or ZIP codes (up to 20 per profile).
Misconfiguring the SAB designation is one of the most common causes of GBP suspension. Listing a public address when you should be a SAB, or using a P.O. Box, UPS Store mailbox, or virtual office as your verification address, can trigger immediate suspension of your profile.
Why it matters for rental operators
Most rental businesses are SABs. You deliver dumpsters, scaffolding, equipment, or porta potties to a job site; customers don't visit your yard. Correctly setting up your profile as an SAB is what allows you to rank for searches across your entire service area instead of only the city your office sits in. It's also what keeps your profile from being suspended.
Examples
- A roll-off dumpster company headquartered in Concord, NC delivers across the Charlotte metro. Configured as an SAB, the profile can rank for "dumpster rental Charlotte", "dumpster rental Huntersville", "dumpster rental Matthews", and any other city in the defined service area.
- A porta potty rental company serving construction sites across three counties lists those three counties as service areas, hides its dispatch yard address, and ranks across all three regions from a single profile.
Common questions
Can I list more than 20 service areas?
No. Google caps SAB service areas at 20 per profile. If you legitimately serve a larger geography, prioritize the highest-revenue cities and counties first. Service areas should be regions you can reliably service within a 1-2 hour drive.
Should I use a P.O. Box for SAB verification?
No. Google prohibits P.O. Boxes, UPS Store mailboxes, remote mailbox services, and virtual offices as verification addresses for SABs. The address must be a real residential home or staffed commercial office. Violations result in suspension.
Can a business be both a storefront and an SAB?
Yes. Google's hybrid configuration allows businesses that serve walk-in customers AND travel to customer locations (e.g., a tool rental shop that also delivers) to show their address publicly AND define service areas. Hybrid setups are common in rental.
